Course Description

This course invites students to engage the atheistic claim that “God is dead” and various responses to it by theologians, philosophers, religious thinkers, and cultural commentators. We will read major texts in the death of God literature, ranging from the writings of St. Paul and St. Augustine to the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Simone de Beauvoir, with the intent of exploring how claims and counterclaims about the death of God both inform and challenge how we give meaning to culture, knowledge, life, and our own personal death.
