Course Description
Do Indian women in Indiana practice their religion the same ways their grandmothers back in India do/did? How do modern women understand their lives, duties, and responsibilities in light of a religion that goes back thousands of years? And what’s with all those goddesses? And what does “arranged marriage” have to do with religion?

Using primary texts, first-person accounts, films and novels, and in-class discussions, students will take turns leading discussions as we explore Indian women’s religious lives. They will write six short essays and one longer research paper over the course of the semester, and make short presentations about their research.
