Religion and Popular Culture

REL-R 102 — Spring 2023

Days and Times
TR 5:20PM - 7:50PM; Class meets 1st eight weeks only.
Course Description

What makes culture popular? Is religion different from culture? Can the popular be religious? This course analyzes the complex relationship between human beings and the material worlds they create, redesign, deconstruct, and critique. We will consider how the production of popular culture aids the expression of religious ideas, collective and personal identity, and our positionality in the universe. During our expedition, students will develop their own interpretations by applying course concepts and ideas to the media of the contexts we encounter. Together, we will learn and practice thinking and talking about how we frame cultural production and the history of religious life.
