Department of Religious Studies

This course surveys the development of Buddhism, from its origins in India to its subsequent expansion across the globe, including the United States. We will pursue two main goals: 1) to gain familiarity with the basic ideas and practices of Buddhism as they have developed in various historical and cultural settings, and 2) to think critically about these ideas and practices and what they imply for those who espouse and engage in them. Course requirements include open-book writing assignments in response to prompts.
