Course Description
Religious people do many things with their religions, but perhaps the most socially consequential maneuver is to legitimate (or delegitimate) various actions, policies, institutions, and role requirements as good or bad, right or wrong. In this course we will try to think through how different religious ethics order the world and motivate people to engage in social and political struggles, up to and including violent conflict. We will examine various sorts of disagreements about morality and its religious sources, and canvas several different theoretical options for making sense of this terrain, so far as we can.
