In this course we look the foundational role of religion in ethical thought, and the effects of this thought on public life in the US and around the world. We look at how the views, practices, and ways of life of individuals and societies bear on issues including (but not limited to): social organization, work and economics, globalization, war and peace, entertainment, illness and disability, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality, self-conception, and the purpose of individual and communal life. The course particularly emphasizes the increasingly global nature of our public life today, and the role religion and ethics play in cross-cultural communication and understanding.
