This course surveys the history and literature of Christianity from c.30-c.450 CE/AD. Topics include persecution and martyrdom, theological controversies over the Trinity and the nature of Christ, Constantine and the establishment of orthodoxy, the rise of monasticism, the Ecumenical Councils, the history of church-state relationships, constructions of gender and sexuality in early Christianity, and the intersection of religious, ethnic, and civic identities, and the development of Holy Land pilgrimages.
