Current Project
Since being awarded a New Directions Fellowship from The Mellon Foundation in 2020, Dr. Michael Kaulana Ing has been studying various aspects of ʻIke Hawaiʻi (Native Hawaiian thought). He recently completed an article that reconceptualizes Kanaka (Hawaiian) identity in light of the growing number of Kanaka that live outside of Hawaiʻi, and is nearing completion of another piece that examines the philosophical anthropology of Davida Malo, a 19th century Hawaiian thinker. Dr. Ing aims to bring ʻIke Hawaiʻi into broader conversations across disciplines such as religious studies and philosophy on questions about what it means to be human.
