In response to Russia’s war against Ukraine, Patrick Lally Michelson published an essay in Public Orthodoxy, an editorial forum for scholars of Orthodox Christianity. Michelson’s essay explores anti-Western and nationalistic currents of Russian Orthodox thought since the eighteenth century to demonstrate both the longevity of this discourse and the challenges of excising it from Russia’s contemporary Church, while gesturing toward the possible: a Russian Orthodoxy otherwise.
