
On October 27th, Stephen Selka gave a talk titled “Afro-Latin America and the Challenges of Representation and Identity in the 21st Century” for the Passport to Colombia and South America series at the University of Central Oklahoma. Selka's talk focused on the interplay between social, political, and economic underrepresentation on the one hand and public visibility on the other. This includes the seemingly paradoxical way in which Afro-Colombians and Afro-Brazilians are underrepresented among the middle class and the political elite, for example, but highly visible in cultural heritage and tourism development projects.
