Inspired by Dr. Jenny Reardon’s presentation last semester on the “The Postgenomic Condition: Truth, Race, and Justice After the Genome” we are gathering to discuss the resurgence of these questions around the category of race. In particular, we hope to follow a similar thread in Reardon’s research which examines identity, justice and democracy as they are often silently embedded in scientific ideas and practices. How are present day conversations on genetics and human biology recouping antiquated notions about race? What genealogies continue to shape the construction of race? How can the humanities and the sciences come together to change the conversation? We are particularly interested in this last question as we cross disciplinary boundaries to engage, learn, and speak to issues of justice.
In this collaborative space, we especially would like to encourage graduate students to engage, and we welcome reading suggestions, which can be directed (along with questions and RSVPs) to Taylor Thomas at thomta@iu.edu.
