Professor Patrick Lally Michelson’s “Russian Orthodox Thought in the Church’s Clerical Academies” was recently published in The Oxford Handbook of Russian Religious Thought (2020). The article explores various currents of academic thought in nineteenth- and early-twentieth century Russian Orthodoxy. The Church’s institutions of higher education played a major role in the development of Orthodox thinking about state, society, religion, law, culture, history, and the relationship between “Holy Russia” and “the West.” They also helped to exacerbate an array of ideological fractures within the Russian Church, culminating in the revolutionary upheavals of 1905–1917, which partly emanated from within the Church before engulfing it.
