Rowena Galavitz recently wrote and published a chapter on the early modern Barcelona nun she has been researching for years. Titled “‘Convento espiritual’ de Hipólita de Jesús: un texto simbólico, un espacio dinámico,” the chapter forms part of the larger work, Reforma católica y disidencia conversa: Diego Pérez de Valdivia y sor Hipólita de Jesús y Rocabertí en Barcelona (1578-1624), published by Editorial Academia del Hispanismo in 2020. This chapter, which grew out of Professor Richard Nance’s Sacred Space seminar, includes a full transcription of the original text, published in the seventeenth century. The work analyzes how the author imbues every object, person, and animal in her convent with textual significance. Indeed, she sees the convent itself as a living, breathing being.
