The journal American Religion, coedited by religious studies professors Cooper Harriss and Sarah Imhoff, will collaborate with the Smithsonian Institute’s Center for the Understanding of Religion in American History on the Under Gods project. Launching as a digital publication in time for next year’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and sponsored by the Henry Luce Foundation, Under Gods will present a kaleidoscopic narrative highlighting one story per decade of US history. Why “Under Gods”? While the United States is often described as “one nation under God,” the added “s” seeks to capture the religious complexity that has shaped the nation from the beginning.
