The Department of Religious Studies hosted a book talk on, The Dread Heights, by anthropologist Basit Kareem Iqbal on October 14, 2025. Iqbal’s research is an important contribution to the study of Islam in contemporary Syria. Praise for the book describes it as “a pathbreaking example of what an ethnography of theology (and specifically eschatology) can look like.” Basit Kareem Iqbal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Associate Member in the Department of Religious Studies at McMaster University. His research explores the difficulty of the present within and across distinct traditions and forms of life.
