Amber Lowe, a 2015 M.Div. graduate of the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), served as a respondent for the second time to ITC’s Charles B. Copher Lecture Series in March 2025. Responding to Dr. Jermaine Marshall’s lecture, “How America Got the Holy Spirit,” Lowe offered a critical and generative engagement with Marshall’s pneumatological framing, raising questions about theological translation, the risks of collapsing African cosmologies into Christian categories, and the limits of syncretism as a framework. Her response emphasized historical nuance, epistemic multiplicity, and the enduring complexity of Black religious formations.
