IU Alumni Collaborate with Schott on a New Book, Remembering Nicaea

Wednesday, May 1, 2024

Together with two recent IU PhD graduates, Dr. Martin Shedd and Prof. Sean Tandy, Jeremy Schott has published Remembering Nicaea, a complete English language translation of Anonymous Cyzicenus’s Ecclesiastical History, the fullest surviving account of the Council of Nicaea (325 CE). The introduction features new arguments for the dating of the text, a discussion of Anonymous Cyzicenus’s sources and their modification, and an evaluation of the larger purpose of the Ecclesiastical History as a unique and instructive source for the christological controversies of the fifth century CE. The book, which includes a complete study of the work, making up-to-date scholarship on this text widely available, stems directly from a student-faculty research collaboration begun as part of IU’s Post-Classical Greek Reading Group.
