On November 5, 2024, Winnifred Sullivan gave a lecture “Legalizing Religion, American Style,” on the legal regulation of religion in the U.S. to the law faculty at the University of Ferrara in Ferrara, Italy. Sullivan argues that despite global standards of religious liberty, the U.S. stands apart, shaped by a strong sense of having pioneered this freedom. The seminar delved into the complex dynamics of religious life in America, highlighting the distinctive features of disestablishment and the lasting effects of racial exclusion.
