Joe Decker presented a paper at the 11th annual Sacred Journeys conference at Chion-in Wajun Kaikan in Kyoto in July. Joe’s paper “From Sacred Trails to Sustainable Tourism: The Dynamics of Pilgro-tourism in Rural Japan,” investigates the revival of pilgrimage routes and the impact of globalization on contemporary pilgrimage culture in rural Japan. Joe is currently residing in Japan, where he is conducting his dissertation research with the generous support of the Japan Foundation for the next 12 months.
