Joe Decker was awarded the Japan Foundation Fellowship, a significant achievement that will support his dissertation research this upcoming fall. This fellowship will enable him to travel to Japan with his family for a year to conduct ethnographic fieldwork for his dissertation. Decker’s dissertation explores the intersection of travel and religion by investigating how secularization and globalization have impacted the way pilgrimage is practiced, managed, and promoted in rural communities in Japan.
