Sarah Imhoff spoke at the 2024 New Institute, hosted by IU’s Borns Jewish Studies Program. Along with Religious Studies PhD alumnus Sean Sidky, as well as Profs. Michael Weiman and Stephen Katz, Imhoff presented research on the theme of Jewishness and Americanness. From stories of Native Americans as one of the Ten Lost Tribes to Columbus’s men as Jews, American Jews have long narrated American history with Jews at the foundation. Imhoff’s presentation discussed Jewish narratives of belonging. discusses what these stories are, who has told them, and what they reveal about American Jewish desires for simultaneous belonging and distinction.
