Was there “religion” in the ancient Mediterranean? Jeremy Schott co-organized a workshop at Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies (Washington, D.C.) on “Translating Religion.” The event stems from his collaborative research with Prof. Rebecca Falcasantos (Amherst College) and IU Alumnus Prof. David Maldonado Rivera (Kenyon College). The team is at work on a fully annotated translation of Sokrates of Constantinople’s Church History, the most important single source for the history of Christianity in the 4th and 5th centuries. The workshop brought together an international array of scholars to discuss the theoretical and pedagogical stakes involved in translating ancient concepts for modern readers. The event was funded by an IU Institute for Advanced Study Collaborative Research Grant. A follow-up Workshop will be held on the IU campus February 7-9, 2024, and is open to all students and faculty.
