Joe Decker presented a paper entitled “Restoring and Reframing Pilgrimage in Japan: Is ‘The Way’ the Way Forward for Pilgrimage in Japan?” at the Institute for Pilgrimage Studies’ fall 2023 symposium, “Restoring Pilgrimage,” held at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Joe’s paper explores how the “Dual Pilgrim” program - a diplomatic partnership officially connecting Spain’s Camino de Santiago with the Kumano Kodo in Japan - has influenced the presentation, promotion, and management of pilgrimage in Japan. We are pleased to announce that Joe was also selected as one of this year’s recipients of the George Greenia Fellowships for Research in Pilgrimage Studies at the symposium. The $2,000 cash prize he received will provide funding to support his future dissertation research in Japan.
