Winnifred Fallers Sullivan gave a keynote address on the theme of “Contestation and Negotiation,” at the Religion & the Cultures of Democracy Conference held at the University of Virginia on October 1-5. The conference examined the loss of cohesion in the democratic public sphere which challenges the preconditions of trust in governance and representation in general. Sullivan addressed the religion jurisprudence of the US Supreme Court in a talk entitled: “Church State Corporation: How the Church-in-Law Limits Religious Freedom.”
