The Department of Religious Studies congratulates Gheorghe Pacurar, who successfully defended his PhD thesis in April. Gheorghe’s dissertation, titled “Incarnate Ecclesiology and the Making of Democratic Law in Interwar Romania,” explores the ways in which members of the Transylvanian Orthodox Church drew upon an ecclesiastical tradition of constitutionality, local autonomy, and lay participation in their efforts to shape legislative debates about law and democracy in Romania in the decade following the First World War. Gheorghe is presently a research librarian at Lucian Blaga Central University Library in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
