Rebecca Manring is in India with a Fulbright professional excellence award conducting research on gajan rituals in connection with her translation of Rupram’s Dharma-mangala. On Tuesday, March 28, she delivered the valedictory address at a 2-day international seminar on Literature and Aesthetics hosted by the Department of Comparative Indian Language and Literature and the Department of English at Calcutta University.
She has also been exploring temples (as in the photo) to the (former) smallpox goddess Sitala along the riverbank cremation areas of north Kolkata. Sitala is enjoying renewed popularity since the pandemic struck.
