Course Description

This course explores the complex intersection of religion and popular culture. We will think expansively about religion, conceptualizing it as a phenomenon not confined to or exhausted by traditional institutions, beliefs, or practices.

Questions we will ask include: How can we observe and analyze representations of religion in popular culture? What can we learn about religion from examining how religious groups adopt aspects of popular culture? Can popular culture function like religion? Using examples from comics, music, sports, celebrity culture, television, and literature (among others), this course considers the myriad ways religion and popular culture influence and reflect each other.
