- Course Description
What is it like to be a religious person in America? This course will introduce students to major traditions and moments in the history of American religion and central concepts in religious studies through five reading memoirs by Americans who reflect on their experience of religion. Through these memoirs we will seek to understand the diversity of religious expression in the United States and note thematic trends. In addition to understanding these author’s religious worlds in their own words, students will engage with scholars of religious studies who contextualize these figures against backdrops of race, capitalism, gender, dis/ability, and class.
