Course Description

This course explores the ways in which sacred biography is used in various contexts to develop theories of authority and history. We will examine different theories of religious authority and how biography is formative in developing “orthodox” methods of interpreting the relationship between humans and God. We specifically focus on the biography of Muhammad, which will allow us to explore the development of biographical traditions in Islam and how changing cultural circumstances influenced the evolution of popular understandings of Muhammad’s life.
