Course Description
This seminar asks students to think methodologically about the characteristics of different forms of visual and textual expression and how they inflect the ways we think about religion. We will consider questions of definition (what is an image; what is a text? what does an image/text do and for whom?), questions of praxis (how does iconoclasm become the staunchest form of idolatry? what are the politics of translation?) and scholarship (how do we approach religious phenomena? are critique/analysis/interpretation perfectly synonymous and interchangeable? What other options of scholarly approach to visual and textual artifacts do we have?).
