Students admitted to the graduate program are admitted with funding, except in unusual cases, such as when a student brings support from some external agency or government. Support generally includes tuition, fees, health insurance, and a living stipend. Students will often work in various teaching capacities for this support, or it will be provided by a fellowship. For more information, refer to the IU Graduate School Tuition and Fees website.
Financial Support
Departmental Funds
The department strives to support students’ research needs as they progress through the program. These needs include things such as conference travel, the acquisition of research material, language learning outside IU, travel for research, and more. These funds are limited and are intended to be used with other funding acquired beyond the department. Instructions for applying for these funds will be disseminated by the Director of Graduate Studies. To ensure equal access to these funds, the DGS will establish one deadline in the fall and another in the spring. These deadlines will also hold for the following funds that are intended for more specific use:
- Devonia and Steve Stein Fellowship in the Study of American Religions
- Katherine A. Cunningham Graduate Research Fund
- Todd Sullivan Memorial Fellowship
- James Ackerman Fellowship for the Study of the Bible
